Celebrating Onderland--I made it!

Just a brief post to let you all know that I finally made it to ONDERLAND! Yes, onderland, another place in Wonderland I suspect.

As you can see, my journey to fitness is going very well, especially with the new WW program and I am feeling awesome. I can only imagine the wonderful pay-back with regards to my horsemanship. I cannot remember when I was here maybe 15 years ago? It's been a long time coming and I am not looking back!

My next mini goal is to hit my 25% weight loss target (which should be this coming week). Then, I'll strive for my 30% weight loss target by the end of January. I can actually see the end on the tunnel on this important but difficult, journey. I know the horses appreciate my efforts. I am more athletic all of the time, I'll live longer, and since physical fitness affects mental and emotional fitness as well, I am more and more in-tune with myself and the horses, and truly, my life in general. I am just SO HAPPY!

If you are struggling with your health, don't wait, please do something now, you and your horsemanship (and your horses) are worth the effort it takes, and you only live once, make it a good, long life! I'll even be your cheerleader, just let me know what I can do to support you!

Remember, as Pat Parelli teaches us: Fitness for Partnership--Both horse and human should have these to achieve true partnership: Mental Fitness, Emotional Fitness, and Physical Fitness.

To ensure that I give you the information correctly, I am going to cut and past directly from the WW website and will add my commentary at the end. If you have more questions, just let me know!

WW Points Plus Program

You have a daily PointsPlus Target
Every food has a PointsPlus value, and your daily PointsPlus Target represents the number of PointsPlus values you should stick to every day in order to lose weight safely. This daily Target is calculated using a scientific formula, and is customized for you.

Each day, you can eat any combination of foods you’d like, while staying within your daily PointsPlus Target. And if you and stick to our Good Health Guidelines, you’ll get the nutrition you needs while you lose weight.

Each food has a PointsPlus value
PointsPlus values are derived from our formula, which we developed based on the latest nutritional science. They take into account the way your body processes the major nutrients:
-fat
-carbohydrates
-protein
-fiber

For every food you eat, those nutrients' impact is considered in one easy-to-work-with number.

How do you figure out PointsPlus values?

You can find the PointsPlus values of any food by using the Plan Manager.Search for the food in the PointsPlusTracker or enter label info into the PointsPlus Calculator.(FYI--there are no cardboard sliders.)Build your own recipe in the Recipe Builder.
When you’re on the go, use our iPhone App or a hand-held Weight Watchers PointsPlus Calculator.

PointsPlus values encourage you to make smarter food choices
When it comes to PointsPlus values, some foods (power foods) simply give you more “bang for the buck.” You can eat more food for the same or fewer PointsPlus values when you choose foods with more protein or fiber, or Power Foods like fruits and vegetables.

Three keys to smarter choices:
-Choose a smaller portion
-Choose a lower-PointsPlus value variation of a food
-Choose an alternative low PointsPlus value food

That is the quick version of it. What I can say is that I always feel satisfied, it is easy to make wise choices while also indulging (guilt free). I cannot say enough about how much I love the WW Program (the old and new). It is a lifestyle that is easily doable and fits well with my lifestyle. The new system is very clear about the need for exercise in your life and assumes that you get in at least 30 minutes per day most days of the week. The folks at my meeting and in the online groups I am part of seem to really like the new program too. The biggest hang up is those used to the old program feeling cheated because of the new Points Plus structure. Frankly, you cannot compare points values becuase everything is calculated differently so, they will just have to get over it! :) There are all new materials for the new program as the old stuff just does not work with it so there is an initial investment for materials. There are also two new PointsPlus cookbooks out there. All older books and recipes you just convert with your calculator for the new PointsPlus Values.

I go to meetings and am an online subscription member. If I could only afford one type of membership, I'd chose the meetings.

Well, that is it! Please, ask questions if you have them.

Michelle,
Thanks for being "out there" and inspiring us.

I'm re-focusing on food and the amounts I eat. I try to have a very natural diet but habits from childhood still dog me, where a bigger plate is always better. (So we bought some smaller plates. :) I end up not feeling stuffed and so feel better.

I looked at the local WW site and meetings and it seems very female oriented. Any thoughts?

Also, using the "PointsPlus" method do you need to buy WW food?

Hi Peter--So glad you enjoy the blog. I love writing it and will take topic suggestions!

WW is not female oriented although probably female dominant regarding demographics. There is a man in my meeting who has been greatly successful losing 80 pounds over the last year.

On WW you can eat "normal" foods, you eat what you like and don't have to buy that processed junk. It is a lifestyle and very livable. Primarily, I love healthy, non-processed foods and enjoy eating all kinds of wonderful things.

At WW meetings, there are differentkinds of leaders and it can be hit and miss but, overall, I find it to be a postitive and supportive environment.

Michelle - I started reading your blog from Petra's referral blogpost. Ironically, I JUST decided to begin the goal of acheiving physical fitness (to add to my emotional and mental fitness!) and rejoined WW after being away for over 15 years (having children!). I have to say I am completely overwhelmed - I have quite a bit to lose and it seems like such a long journey. How did you stay motivated at the beginning and throughout your time at WW. The new PointsPlus was just launched at the meeting last week (good timing on my part!) - how do you find the new program?? I too am playing with in Level 3 - but sadly haven't officially assessed yet as I keep putting it off until I lose some weight. Any advice on staying motivated for the long term (I have 70 lb to lose) or any tips you can pass along would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi Shannon--

Firt let me start by saying congrats for getting back to WW. I do like the new program very much and find it to be easy to follow. That said, I personally focus on 5% targets to keep it manageable. Try to add exercise into your routine if you don't already it will make a huge difference. Also, try to stay away from processed foods--they are not good for you. Plan your menus weekly, try new recipes, and keep it creative and interesting, just like your Parelli journey. Be sure to eat your daily requirements. If you look at your plate, be thinking in terms of the meat portion as a side, not the main attraction...the veggies are the main attraction! Also, don't deprive yourself it will come back to bite you. Be sure to follow the program, just the way it is written, and it works and is a liveable option. This is for life, not just something to do. Much like the Parelli path. If you need a cheerleader, I am here! If I can do it, anyone can! If you stray off track, don't ever quick, just dust off, and get back on the proverbial horse! Best wishes and huge hugs.
